The Banquet
Normally, the theme of banquets would be EATING or FEASTING but this particular banquet had a theme of death. Any hopes of the NC-16 rating referring to some hopeful nudity of zhang ziyi was banished in the opening moments when blood was shed and beheading becomes so normal amongst all the female cringing in the cinema. Of course, there are some compromising shots of zhang ziyi. But the blood is really used at will. And for some reason, when qing yu reads out the song that wu lang composes, he suddenly turns horny and starts to strip her.. and then zhang ziyi also have to act so lang bei and cry her heart out before she mates wif the king to gain his trust. But of cos' , the sex part is not the focus of the show.
For people as kantang as me, pls do not watch the movie. It is draggy and i cannot appreciate such chinese lingo. Its as cheem as the qian li zhi wai lyrics.. people like me was forced in tchs to read chinese history and appreciate chinese poems by li bai.. and up til now i dun understand why and how my 4b classmates can STUDY chinese lit.. for eg, do u know the translation for mole (in the context of spy) or superstition.. and the phrases are used in the intellectual sense as the king n queen banter.. if u caught V for Vendetta, that was a show which i loved the english lingo wif its full bombasticness and vicissitudes.. now this is a chinese version with a major play on the chinese lingo.. REALLY.. i m amazed.. and every time they sing tat song and act out a play, i wouldnt be able to enjoy the chinese nature depicted. but still the swordplay and fight scenes are as epic as crouching tiger and still watchable.. its a show to outscheme and outsmart everyone and amongst it all, the true inherent unconditional love shines thru' and manages to move the lonely man's heart, albeit in vain. Still, the nobility of the usurper king to willingly down the poison cup of wine becos he "can't resist the wife's toast" is applauded.
Many issues discussed but unless u r a C.lit person u wont be able to enjoy it as much. of cos u can be like me and look in awe at the linguistic capability. Shakesphere had his shakesperean english but the old imperial chinese chinese is also qie able.
I met up wif old fren WL todae since i was at SIMTech the whole day. He mentioned smth tat will soon be an issue for all of us.. apparently 2 of his classmates have already gotten married this yr and he was invited to both of their weddings.. then i rmb YL telling me that since working and at this age, you will be invited to lotsa weddings, almost at the frequency of once a mth. So one can get rdy a wedding suit or dress and keep using it every mth..
Wedding Banquets :)
P.S i juz read imdb review n this was an apt descript
"Unlike all of its recent predecessors, The Banquet doesn't shy away from copious spurts of blood, and has many of its participants frolicking all over the shop barely clothed, recalling the halcyon days when Tsui Hark was actually making movies you'd care to watch. And once looking beyond the hackneyed setting, with its wicked emperor and suffering victims, there's quite a lot to relish in The Banquet, especially its message that greed and self-sacrifice equally do not pay off in the long run"
n i juz realised it is a loose adaption of HAMLET
